Stretched from west to east for about 11 km is 3.6 km wide, for a perimeter of around 33.3 km. Who comes to Lampedusa for the first time, especially by air, the first image that you have of the island is that of a long strip of land flat and arid.

 Closer to the coast of Tunisia (Africa) than to the Italian coast (Europe), Lampedusa houses environments and biodiversity of these two continents.

The island is, both on land and at sea, “protected”, in fact along its coastline falls a regional reserve, a protected marine area, the sites of Community interest.

Many species symbol of Lampedusa evidence of its rich biodiversity, the turtle Caretta caretta is the most known and the site where it lays its eggs became famous in Italy and to the scientific world, thanks to a German naturalist who studied first in this island in 1985, Dieter Gramentz.
